Globalization and evolution of canned
products towards adaptations and formats

The various sectors of the global economy are going through new impacts and dynamics having direct effects in the market. Logically, this is a springboard for those who quickly adapt to the conditions imposed by them.
__In our industry, the gradual transition from canned products, adaptations and co-productions to formats has been fast. In less than five years we have experienced deep changes that have forced the sector
to carry out a reconditioning of the business in all aspects – creative areas, production schemes, commercialization strategies, marketing and screen distribution.
__In this way, formats have become an answer, breaking paradigms that seemed unchangeable until recently and offering new options and developments for entertainment. They prove to be a ductile and modern product with capabilities like providing higher assimilation, regional identity and adaptation to the demands from objective and local markets.
__Another strength of formats is the fact that they are scripts that have already been tested in different countries having great success. And this confidence in Latin American ratings is precisely the successful strategy used by many visionaries that see telenovelas as a comprehensive product with an established audience. On the other hand, telenovelas and long running series – as they are called in many places – offer networks a vast panorama. So vast that rumor has it that after having this product before their faces for twenty years, large networks and major production companies in the United States have finally realized this is a business worth millions and set off after products, talents and even formulae.
___Competition will be at the top of the industry – more specifically, the telenovela industry – since they are planning to produce 12 telenovelas this year, showing that NBC, ABC and Twenty Century Fox are here to stay, just like the large European groups, which are already making the most out of this business highway. But this is not their only plan – they go for more. Their strategy is also to form a catalog that allows them to compete for international markets.
___It is worth mentioning that telenovelas are products that deserve special attention due to their features of not only cultural and social value but also an economic one, offering excellent qualities like costs versus reception and their acknowledgement in the entertainment global market.
___Seeing the matter from this perspective, given their adaptability, formats turn to be the means for the genre to surpass
language, culture, thematic and distribution barriers. They assure audiences and provide more certainty, longed by purchasers.
___Hence the importance of stimulating everything that makes clients feel more in need of including telenovelas in their program schedules, because this is the only way to increase loyalty for this kind of programs as well as improving quality.
___Strengthening the existing bases and setting new industry guidelines through a systematic and specialized analysis, through an extensive knowledge of the requirements and the demands from different markets, and through statistics on production, genres, needs, consumption and contents.
___In this sense, this year the Fourth Summit of the Telenovela and Fiction Format Industry will be the perfect scene
for taking a closer look at the deepest knowledge and information update, as well as at the exchange of strategies and ideas that guarantee the permanence of these programs in an increasingly competitive world market. See you at the Summit.
